How to Create a WordPress Autoblog

Are you looking to publish the web content quickly without the need to select the topics, to write down the quality articles and to schedule the publishing on your own? Here, we highly recommend you to create a WordPress autoblog – a special website or a blog that can automatically pull, fetch and post fresh content from some other websites by gathering and compiling their RSS feeds.

Initially, you may relate the autoblog with some bad terms such as content spamming or website scraping. But now, you can create the autoblog for good. For instance, it can be used to gather and curate the news on some special topics, to repost some of your best articles on multiple platforms, to publish the critical information effortlessly on company intranets or some private sites and many more. Here is a warning that if you want to create a public autoblog, you’d better not to copy all the contents and images, but only pull in some links and summaries from the original source.

Now, as many webmasters have no idea of how to create such a website, we’d like to share a simple tutorial about how to create a WordPress autoblog without the possibility to be subject to the copyright infringement.

Step 1 – Install the RSS Aggregator Plugin

We have searched a lot of related plugins that can be used to create a WordPress autoblog, among which the RSS Aggregator is the most functional, comprehensive and user-friendly one. It can be regarded as a perfect RSS feed solution to all the WordPress based websites, which imports, merges and showcases the Atom feeds and RSS effectively. In addition, by leveraging their exclusively generated shortcode, you can display all your imported feed items from many online sources to your own website automatically.

Now, you can install it via your WordPress admin panel and find the new tab that is named as RSS Aggregator. After that, you need to click the Settings button from the drop-down list to finish the general plugin settings.

General Plugin Settings

This plugin has multiple general settings for you to decide. Check the settings screenshot and the general explanations of some critical settings in the following. Here, the mentioned “feed item” means the content you copy from the source site to your autoblog.

General Plugin Settings

  • Feed item by age – This part allows you to decide the maximum days allowed for each feed item. Here, simply leave it empty for no limit so that your outdated feed items will not be deleted.
  • Feed item per feed – Here, you can decide the maximum number of feed items to be stored. Again, set no limit for it so that your old feed items will not be removed.
  • Processing interval – You can determine how frequently the feed sources need to check for some updates and fetch the content accordingly. The recommended interval is one hour.
  • Unique titles – If you want, you can give the same title to multiple feed items. Personally, we do no recommend you to check this setting for your feed items may not be imported successfully if they have the identical titles as your previously imported items.
  • Custom feed URL, title and limit – This plugin gives you the freedom to create the custom feed so that you can decide the URL, title and the maximum number of items for each custom feed.

General Display Settings

In this part, you need to set up some general options that decide how your feed items will be displayed.

General Display Settings

For instance, you need to determine whether to link the feed item to the source article, whether to show the authors of the source content and whether to set the maximum length for the titles of the feed contents. In addition, if you need to showcase the feed items on multiple webpages, you need to decide the pagination. If your autoblog has the video feed items, you should choose to use the source page link or the embedded video player. If the feed contents have some links, you need to decide how the links to be opened and whether to set them as the “nofollow” links.

Source Display Settings

Here, you need to finish some settings that control how the source contents of the feed items can be showcased.

Source Display Settings

Firstly, you should enable the option to showcase the name of the source content with your preferred text that precedes the source. Also, if you want, you can link to the source site.

Besides the source display, you can also control the date display. Unless you have the specific needs, you can leave these settings as default.

Step 2 – Create the Autoblog by Adding the New Feed Source

Now, you can start creating the autoblog. Here, you need to click the Add New button from the newly added tab to add the feed source, and then, give the source a title in the beginning. Personally, you’d better enter the name of a website that you want to get the content and feeds from.

After that, you should enter the URL for that feed source. For this part, you can surely enter the website URL, but it would be better for you to enter the URL for the RSS feed. Here, do not forget to click the Validate Feed link that can test the validity of your entered URL effectively.

In addition, if you want, you can tick the “Link to Enclosure” checkbox so that all the feed items can link to the source URLs in the enclosure tag but not link to the original articles directly.

As for the Limit setting and the Unique Title setting, you can pass these two options for you have decided them in the step 1.

Add New Feed Source

Now, you need to move to the right hand of the whole screen, from which you can find the Feed Processing meta box. In this box, you need to make sure that the feed status is Active and the content can be imported immediately from the source site with no pause. As for the Update Interval and the Old Feed Delete, you can leave them unchanged for you have already set up them previously.

Feed Processing

Next, you need to click the Publish Feed button for adding the feed source successfully. If the URL is correct and the feed is valid, you can find a Feed Preview section that showcases the latest 5 published posts from the source site, which can be added to your autoblog at once.

In addition, you can find a “Force the Feed” checkbox here, which needs to be ticked if you see an “Invalid Feed” error message but are sure that the URL is not wrong.

Step 3 – Make the Autoblog Public

Now, you can click the Feed Sources button to figure out whether your newly added source feed have worked properly or not, such as the working status, the latest update and the imported contents.

Feed Sources

If everything is fine, you can click the Import & Export button to import the feed source to your autoblog. Here, you only need to enter the feed URL, and then, click the Bulk Import button.

Next, you simply need to publicize your autoblog. To do this, you should leverage the following showcased shortcode. Here, we highly recommend you to add it to the website homepage. In addition, there are a lot of parameters that can be added into the shortcode for different purposes. Check this page for more detailed information.

The homepage of your autoblog looks like as following.

If you feel that the autoblog is too simple and want to add the post summary and thumbnail, you can also install the Excerpts and Thumbnails add-on to decide whether to showcase the excerpts, the “Read More” links, the social buttons and the thumbnail images.
